WRECK APPRECIATION

Overall Objectives

To enable divers to safely dive wrecks and recognise and appreciate what they see.

Course Aims

The main aims of the course are to show students:

  • What wrecks are – historical timecapsules, artificial reefs and havens for marine life
  • How to get information on wreck sites
  • How to identify the major parts of a wreck
  • The additional equipment and techniques used for wreck diving
  • Marine diversity on wrecks
  • Laws and responsibilities relating to ‘wreck’
  • How to make basic site sketches
  • Encourage further wreck study

Entry Level

The minimum entry level for this course is Ocean Diver, or equivalent. Ocean Divers are limited to a maximum depth of 20 metres, with no compulsory decompression and may be doing skills such as distance line and delayed SMB for the first time, so instructors should allow for this. For more experienced groups, the instructor may tailor the choice of site and place more emphasis on more advanced skills, such as site recording.

Ocean Divers may claim accreditation towards their Sport Diver qualification in respect of use of distance line (part of SO3) and DSMB (part of SO4).
